The original Haunted debuted on the sublime Sid & Nancy soundtrack. That’s the version sung by Cait O’Riordan and it is gorgeous. Both the film and the soundtrack had more influence on my teenage years than I care to admit. I’ve listened to Haunted a thousand times since.
Then Shane MacGowan had to go and record another version with Sinead O’Conner in the nineties; knowing full well they would die five months apart some twenty-eight years later.
Horrible kismet.
Two of the three singers of Haunted are dead.
It’s bad poetry.
Haunted, indeed. It’s a duet of an angel and a beggar. The weather beaten and otherworldly. And it is gorgeous and sad and, yes, haunting.
