Russian Roulette – The Lords of the New Church / Songs #8

I’m living out Frank Coppola’s dreams, Outta my mind, I’m feelin’ mean….

I must have been sixteen years old when I first heard this song. An old high school flame turned me on to it. She had an amazing vinyl collection – punk rock and disco. I was instantly twitterpated.

She put Russian Roulette on a mix tape for me once. I listened to that tape three summers strong.

And then, nothing.

The mix tape was lost or stolen, and I forgot all about Russian Roulette. Strangely enough, I didn’t disconnect from The Lords of the New Church proper. Their cover of Like a Virgin had made its way to dozens of my mix tapes and playlists over the years.

Russian Roulette just left a hole where a memory once was.

Thank you folks, I’ll be here all night.

Then just a few short years ago, our paths crossed again. Reunited, and it felt so good. Great songs are like greater friends or lovers. That ticklish, queasy sense of deja vu, that magic moment of picking up right where you left off.

Hey, hey, hey, we’re in the movie, I feel up and I feel groovy…
